Independence Day is colloquially known as July 4, and in the United States it is a federal holiday commemorating the Declaration of Independence of the United States, which has been celebrated since July 4, 1776. The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies were no longer subject and subordinate to the British monarch King George III, that they were now united, free and independent states. The Congress had voted for the Declaration of Independence two days earlier, on 2 July 1776, but it was not declared until 4 July. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family gatherings, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national holiday of the United States.
