80 years ago B-17G emergency landing on Lake Zug, Switzerland

Engraved cigarette case from the Engineer / Top Turret Gunner: S/Sgt John Miller, Jr. The cigarette case is engraved with various symbols as a reminder of what he experienced on 16 March 1944. B-17G, Serial No: 42-38160, Marking: J, Nik Name: Lonsome Polecat. 8th Air Force, 385th Bomb Group, 550th Squadron. Took off from Great Ashfield (GB) with the mission to bomb Augsburg (DE). One hour after the attack on Augsburg, the formation was attacked by eight to ten Bf 109s. The B-17 of pilot 1 Lt Robert W. Meyer left the formation with engine number 4 shut down in the direction of Switzerland, where it later made an emergency landing on Lake Zug. The B-17 was recovered in 1952 by Martin Schaffner "Bomben Schaffner" and exhibited at various locations in Switzerland until the B-17 had to make way  a new housing estate in St. Moritz at the beginning of the 1970s
