Col. Gail Halvorsen "Uncle Wiggle Wing" Celebrates its 101th birthday on October 10, 2021. Berlin Airlift 24 June 1948 - 12 May 1949. The Airlift officially ended on 30 September 1949. In 1948, Col. Gail Halvorsen invented the small parachutes filled with chocolate and other sweets for the starving children of West Berlin, which he dropped from his plane on approach to Tempelhof.
