B-24 crash Meggen-Adligenswil, February 27, 1945

The B-24J-15FO, Serail No: 42-51903, Marking: W, Nik Name: "Yellow Willy". From the 15th Air Force, 44th Bomb Group, 777th Squadron Launched at Pantanella (I) with the mission to bomb the Augsburg (D) marshalling yard, in the process the B-24J suffered a heavy flab hit. As a result, engine number 4 had to be shut down, while engine number 2 smoked heavily. At 14:25, Lambert left formation in the area of Füssen (D). At the Swiss border, the aircraft was intercepted by Swiss fighters. Lambert could no longer control the aircraft and so he could not comply with the request to land at Dübendorf. Over Dietikon, Lambert gave the order to parachute down. Two crew members were slightly injured during the landing. The pilotless bomber flew towards central Switzerland, Pilatus where it was strafed by Swiss Morane fighters over Lucerne and a few minutes later the plane was in flames and crashed into a forest area near Meggen-Adligenswil.
