The scrapping of the Bombers

By the end of the war in 1945, 345 tons of aluminum from the scrapping of the bombers had been delivered to industry. The recovered aluminum had to be cleared through customs, as did the other parts of the bombers that remained in Switzerland. Recruits cut up the rubber tires so that they could be imported as pure rubber, since the customs rate for rubber was far below that for tires!!! Over half a million rounds of 12.7 mm ammunition were broken up in the presence of an American expert at the Altorf ammunition factory. Another 120 tons of material, including instruments and personal equipment of the crews, which had been stored in Swiss armories, were transported by truck to Erding in Germany, dumped into a huge pit and then set on fire. Among the cargo were 24 bombs that had been found in Switzerland.
